Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes
5.0

Into The Darkest Corner is a re-read I’ve been meaning to get around to for ages. It must be 10 years since I last read it and I’d placed it on a bit of a pedestal as far as nail-bitingly tense psychological thrillers go. Did it live up to expectations the second time around? Undoubtedly.

Cathy’s story is told over dual timelines; we witness her life before Lee and after Lee. The story is dark, it’s graphic, and it’s unputdownable. The dual timelines work particularly well with this story as we see plot points mirrored throughout the chapters.

Lee seems too good to be true. He’s gorgeous, he’s charming, and he seems to feel the same way about Cathy. Slowly, cracks appear in Lee’s facade. Cathy feels trapped as his true colours begin to show. The full impact of which changes her life beyond all recognition.

Themes of domestic abuse and mental health issues are integral to this book. It’s not for the feint hearted. But if you like your fiction on the darker and grittier side, this one is well worth picking up.
