The Heat Will Kill You First: Life and Death on a Scorched Planet by Jeff Goodell

dark informative medium-paced

5.0

Educating and terrifying, this book is a must-read for anybody who remotely cares about the planet. Most of the books I read are fiction, but I would put this book on a list of recommended nonfiction reads for people who typically read nonfiction—this non-fiction read tells a compelling story. After reading this book, I’ve sought out more non-fiction reads. This book is very well-researched, combining stories of individuals with facts. The personal stories carry this novel—featuring hikers, scientists, journalists, and farm workers. I especially was fascinated by Chapter 8, which discusses the impact of extreme heat on outdoor workers. Weeks later, I can still remember all of the stories described in The Heat Will Kill You First. This is not just another climate change book. It is memorable and special. It foretells the real-life impact of extreme heat, and leaves it easy to imagine how all of us—neighbors, loved ones, and strangers, will manage on a hotter planet. I listened to this book on audiobook, and I thought the narration was excellent as well. BookTok, give this book a read!
