Chemistry is change or Lessons in Change- change in every sense of the word for a story set in the 1950’s- 1960’s whose lessons are still pertinent today.
I avoided this book for a year, again because of my sometimes misguided belief that popular does not equal good; I was wrong in the case. While the main character is the stereotypical super intellectual who has difficulties navigating the subtleties of social connections and discourse, she is completely lovable (not to mention strong, determined and honest), and I was cheering for her throughout the book.
I also really appreciated the tension between science and religion. While no longer adhering to the tenets of any organized religion, some of my own beliefs and observations were espoused by our main character though I suspect some negative reviews have been from religious minded people.
I was put off early on in the story with the frequent changing of time and perspective which made the story a little difficult for me to get into initially. The story eventually fell into a good rhythm and smoothed out.
Overall this book is worthy of all the hype! Shame to all the publishers who turned this story down for years- huge mistake. Huge. I can’t wait for the movie!
