Cancer Schmancer by Fran Drescher

emotional funny informative reflective sad fast-paced

3.75

This book was funny, heart-wrenching, educational, and hopeful. Fran Drescher has such incredible self-awareness and writes about her cancer journey with a refreshing amount of honesty. It is frustrating (and oddly validating) that she was repeatedly misdiagnosed and mistreated throughout her life, and it highlights the failures of our medical system. And yet, despite the solemn subject of the book, Fran still organically weaves in a lightheartedness in her narration that carries the reader through the heavier emotions brought up throughout the text. My only critiques are that I wish the book was written with slightly more distance than one year post-op. While there's something very raw and real about the way the book ends, Fran leaves us still in the thick of it, and I wish she could have included even one chapter (or an afterward) with her perspective being 5 years out. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone interested in women's health, cancer treatments, or the holistic impact of diseases
