I haven't ever read Carmilla, and hadn't heard of it until I started reading Hungerstone, so I can't say anything as to how similar this novel is to its inspiration.
That being said, I adored Hungerstone. Love me some lesbian vampires and horrible men getting their competence! Good for you, Lenore! I knew I was in for a good time when the novel starts with a quote from "The VVitch".
