Thank you to Macmillan for the audiobook copy!
I was very interested in the synopsis of this book - living in a northern state, I know plenty of Snowbirds, though the ones I know usually go to Florida. The idea of someone going missing while solo hiking has always unnerved me, so I knew this would be a mystery type story for me to enjoy.
I thought that the way the story ping-ponged between the different events, with the present when Grant is actively missing, to what led up to him on the trail on his own. I liked the community feeling of La Desert and the less conventional relationship that Kim and Grant had, of being together 30 years without getting married and Kim feeling as though they were thriving while having their partings and reuniting, and Grant feeling like they should tie the knot. It really put the question on if he was missing on purpose or was still alive and lost or had succumb to the elements.
I, unfortunately, was left a little underwhelmed by the ending. I thought we'd see a bit more of a high stakes situation than what was presented, so this knocked back my rating a little bit. But overall, I'm glad that I listened to it.
I would recommend this one to anyone who enjoys a lower stakes fiction with competing parts of the timeline and some mystery.
