It was fine. I thought the first 2/3 of the book were relatively well-paced and interesting and the depiction of the afterlife was unique and compelling. I thought the last 1/3 dragged on and on though. It truly felt like Slayton did not know how he wanted to end this book, and there were multiple times where I felt that surely we were nearing the climax of the fight with John only for there to be one more thing in the distance that kept it going. I also hated that Vic and Adam spent maybe 30 pages of this book together. It felt like Slayton did not know how to make their romance work if they were on the page together. Also, I did not care for the way the main conflict with John was sorted out. Like, Adam says he doesn't want to kill John (which I guess would be fine for the character's morals if he hadn't already killed multiple times out of necessity in this series already) and he doesn't want other people to kill him because that's just being a coward so he...condemns him to a life in prison to be tortured? With the idea that he's not going to live that long anyway? And Slayton wants us to believe this is the morally superior option? It felt so anticlimatic and also gross.
