Next of Kin by Hannah Bonam-Young
3.0

cons:
- “what so we love each other but i can’t touch your butt” is when the first star was lost. maybe being a horny ass man with a one track mind is realistic but that’s not why im reading a novel about a fictional relationship thank you very much
- i feel the same way about his pattern of angry outbursts. i appreciate that he is going to therapy but that does not mean i enjoyed the fact that it remained an issue throughout the novel & that he punched a hole in the wall??!???? again, maybe that’s realistic & ik it was supposed to be a moment of weakness but im not here for realism
- someone that “just gets you” & makes you feel sexy does not a perfect partner make. im so sorry but i did indeed roll my eyes
- him playing a song he wrote for her??? it’s a no for me
- can we please stop praising men for ensuring their sexual partners are equally satisfied?? like that is the bar. meeting it does not earn you a gold star
- why were they talking about marriage & changing their last names so fast? to the ends of the earth?? chill out
- my final nitpick: i don’t love it that she was chasing after him at the end & seemed more obsessed w him at times than he did with her

pros:
- basically the entire first half! you obviously have to suspend your disbelief to go along with the premise but i was totally on board
- both of them being dedicated guardians that sought to put the kids first
- overall, they were good communicators & expressed boundaries really well
- his affection for willow & the way he stepped up to take care of her because he cared about both of them was very sweet
- hannah crafts such fleshed out characters & her male leads in particular feel so unique

the first half was a 5 star read. the second half? lowkey a 2?
