Skyward
by Brandon Sanderson
Claim the stars .
This is such a big let down . At this point I can say that I've matured in this past year enough that I no longer enjoy stories about impulsive youths who've had a hard life . Though I'm probably one of those impulsive youths I cannot relate to them .
I read Sanderson's The Final Empire in October and it went on to become one of my favorite novels , so I was obviously excited when I heard about Skyward . A new ya series by Sanderson . But let me put this straight , this is nothing like the breathtaking epic fantasy . This is just another mediocre ya sci-fi . And comparing this to it would be just preposterous .
Detritus is a wasteland planet , its atmosphere surrounded with layers of debris . About 70 years ago humans had crashed on this planet aboard the starship Defiant while escaping from the Krell . The people on the Defiant scattered in groups and started living inside the caves underground .
In the present we follow Spensa Nightshade , daughter of the disgraced pilot Zee Nightshade aka Chaser , who had abandoned the fight against the Krell during the War of Alta and deemed a coward . Now it is her dream to become a pilot like her father and prove everyone wrong .
I'm fed up with these hot headed rebellious protagonists who abstain from using their brains out reasoning power . It's like I've been reading about characters like Spensa over and over again . And I've just had it enough .
Sanderson by no means is not an adept writer . There are glimpses of his flair in the action sequences . But I think writing about angsty teenagers isn't his forte . The writing style was kinda erratic and jarring for me .
And if I talk about the characters there were none notable except the protagonist Spensa . I get it , with the enormous cast of characters it must be really difficult . But the lack of strong supporting characters is missed sorely in this book . Characters like Kimmalyn and Jorgen are simply two dimensional . I did like Sanderson including diverse characters , but I wish they could be something more .
Overall this was pretty much an unsatisfying experience which I'd like to forget quickly . Hopefully , Sanderson makes the sequel much better .
