Moby-Dick: Or, the Whale
by Herman Melville
Actually a good work of literature. Enjoyable to read, if you're open to learning a lot about whales and whaling. (It's actually pretty interesting.) It definitely takes more effort to read than a modern book. Sentences are long, pulling against the strength of many semicolons, and festooned with recondite vocabulary. You'll encounter many a rambling monologue. It's funny at times, too, and overall has a reflective tone: The action scenes are scattered among musings on whales, humans, and society, so that even Ahab, a central figure of the book, appears less frequently and less prominently than you might expect.
