Nothing to Be Frightened of
by Julian Barnes
I read this book because it’s covid quarantine and I’m thinking about death a lot and because Jon Krakauer recommended it in an interview I watched of him on YouTube. Julian Barnes is not my cup of tea. He believes himself to be immensely clever and while I do appreciate the repeated small details that are sprinkled through the book often enough that they begin to feel like inside jokes with the author, I could have done away with most of the philosophizing.
What I really wanted was a gritty exploration into the fear of death. This was more of an homage to dead French writers I had never heard of.
