I loved this book and keep thinking about it a week later! It’s the epic story (spanning at least 20 years) of a resilient Indian girl whose life and circumstances—and some naive choices—handed her lemons but she made it.

Have you ever heard the story of the Canadian guy Kyle MacDonald who, starting with one red paper clip, traded and bartered (14 times over the course of one year and ended up with a house in Saskatchewan? This is (metaphorically) Pom’s story. She started by losing her whole family and village in a tidal wave in Bangladesh, and time after time she ended up in a terrible situation, reinvented herself, and ultimately improved upon her situation. This isn’t exactly a “pull herself up by her bootstraps” situation—she is never totally in control of the direction of her life—but she is guided by values.

This is a story of the ways circumstances change who we are throughout our lives, but also about the ways we are always tethered to who we have always been.

This was an extremely enjoyable listen!!
