Joyland by Stephen King

5.0

I don’t recall anyone mentioning this book before, so I had typical Stephen-King-is-a-great-author expectations, but I was shocked how much I loved it. This book uses the same framework as REVIVAL with the narrator being the wise elder reflecting on his youth.

If you were one of those people who claims Stephen King can’t write complex realistic women, the central female character in this book is fully realized and wonderfully written. she is smart, guarded, honest, deceptive, and full of love.

The main character is likewise complex and his motivations are sound and fun.

The primary setting of a theme park makes for some fun adventures and I really will not forget the main character dressed up in the dog costume and how vivid that was in my imagination.
