The Girls by Emma Cline

I tried on being a hippie in my younger years, hanging out with new people while thinking a panicked, "I like cleaner things more and I feel depressed and lost when I'm next to you." The Girls expertly follows this uncomfortable journey so many of us took while trying to find our place. As a whole the book feels deflated and soggy, but many of its discrete parts (Cline spins some masterful allusions) were more than worthwhile.
