The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

this book wrecked me emotionally. while i do love historical fiction it’s usually much more dated, i’ve never read anything that was based in the time period this book ranges (50s - present day). i really enjoyed the old hollywood scene. our main character, evelyn hugo, was such a captivating character. i imagined her as what marilyn monroe would have been had she lived to see an older age. she was full on intrigue and complications. monique, on the other hand, i felt was quite underdeveloped. her story was interesting, but i found myself wanting more of her character. evelyn completely eclipsed her. you could also very much tell that this was a white woman trying to write the experience of a mixed race woman because i feel like all of monique’s experiences were the obvious and often used situations we see mixed race people in. i do think reid handled the complexities of being a bisexual woman in a time where there was such a binary: you were either gay or straight. overall i would highly recommend this book to anyone, it was very well paced and a really enjoyable read
