The Sweetness of Water
by Nathan Harris
This was a good historical fiction novel taking place in the days of the Civil War and the Emancipation Proclamation. I am rating this a 4 based on the type of book it is-- not rating in comparison to the page-turner rom com books with a lot of dialog that I normally like to read.
It was very descriptive and a little drawn out, with the murder not taking place until halfway through the book. (This is not a spoiler, the synopsis says there is a murder) Good character development though, and interesting dynamic between George and Isabelle. Isabelle was an assertive woman who put men in their place even when women had no power.
The Walker family was very likeable - they were probably the only folks in Old Ox that not only treated black men with respect, but also treated them like family.
I also enjoyed getting immersed in the time period-- a good reminder that it once was very difficult to travel only by horse or donkey, cabins were lit by candlelight, and so much manual labor on the farms.
