Salt and Bone by Rey Luca
4.5
I’ve read a few of Rey Luca’s books, and Salt & Bone is definitely my favorite so far. It’s an interesting premise, with our two protagonists Briar and Evelyn being hunters who take down paranormal entities. They’ve known each other since they were kids and have a bit of an antagonistic relationship, but they find themselves working together on a case that pulls them back into each other's orbit.
The story is written in third person present tense, although it goes back and forth between the present and the past, weaving the two together to show their meeting, the development of their relationships and experiences, and what they’re going through now. I loved the way the parts wove together, slowly revealing their history and connection. If there is any criticism I have it’s that I found myself wishing the parts of the story that take place in the past were written in past tense, because the only thing that really made it obvious were the chapter titles and it felt odd to be reading things that were in the past in present tense.
I loved both Briar and Evelyn as characters, and there are a lot of really great side characters as well. The story moves quickly, with them engaging several different entities throughout, but takes its time with relationship development which I really enjoyed. Everything wrapped up nicely at the end, but also left open the possibility of more to come.
I received a free ARC from BookSirens, but my review is unbiased and left voluntarily.
