Amulet by Roberto Bolaño

1.0

Totally underwhelmed. It won't put me off reading 2666 and Savage Detectives, but I do hope they're much better. It's translated so I can't be too harsh on the prose, but it doesn't strike me as particularly well written. In addition, the main character is just sort of pathetic and wispy. There's not much to her, despite the first person narration. Look at how much Raymond Carver could put into a character in 2 paragraphs and then read 6 or 7 chapters of this hollow idiot.

Plus, the self reference stuff kept reminding me of Pnin and it does not compare favorably.
