The Committed
by Viet Thanh Nguyen
This was a wild ride, but I liked it a lot and I think fans of The Sympathizer won't be disappointed! It maybe doesn't live up to that standard, because the plot is a little all over the place, but in general, it's still a lot of fun and very thought-provoking. Viet Thanh Nguyen uses a lot more rhetorical devices (like the pages-long sentences), most but not all of which really worked for me! Because it's set in Paris, it deeply explores the narrator's relationship with France, Vietnam's colonizer, and the home of his father. In general, there is a lot of philosophizing about colonization and revolution that I mostly found compelling but also found tiring and long-winded at times.
I definitely think you need to read The Sympathizer to get the book's flow.
