This book had me in a constant love-hate relationship with every character (and I loved every second of it). They were all complex, flawed, ambitious, brilliant, and often times, frustrating.
Lately I find I am drawn to books that make me think, and this one definitely delivered. A secret society uncovering the truths of the universe? Yes please. Add in a highly academic vibe with a deathly undertone, and I was hooked. It also presents an opportunity for discussion on whether or not knowledge should be hoarded and “safe-guarded” (withheld) for any reason.
The chapters are long but the character dynamics are what kept me reading. I do wish there had been more insight into the world (manor) around them. It’s so character-driven, that things felt a little monotonous at times. Overall this was such a clever, thought-provoking read and the ending truly caught me off guard.
If you love character-driven, dark academia with morally gray cast dynamics, this one’s for you.
