Wild Child: A Journey Through Nature by Dara McAnulty

5.0

This is a stunning, informative and fascinating book all about nature.
It guides the reader to identify plants, animals and insects in the local environment and teaches young children how to explore habitats.

The book is subdivided into five sections. I love the fact that it starts by encouraging children to just observe what they can see from their own window. Something it is so easy to take for granted! It moves on to chapters on The Garden, The Woods, Going Upland and The River.

Each chapter has such a range of material: facts, poetry and great activities such as making a Bird Feeder, a Terrarium or a Journey Stick.

My 7 year old daughter has frequently picked up this book to read. She loves reading the poetic verses aloud and she has learnt such a lot of new facts: 'Mummy did you know that May Bugs, Red Underwing Moths and Ladybirds all like to live in Oak Trees?'
The illustrations throughout are absolutely incredible. Barry Falls is such a talented artist.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to encourage or develop a love of local wildlife with their children. It would also make a lovely gift.
