Fireborn by Keri Arthur
4.0
I got this book mainly because there was a phoenix in it. I mean, how cool is that!? The author does an excellent job of establishing them as a species with unique magic and mythology.
Emberly (Yes, that's really her name) occasionally has visions of people dying. When it's her ex boyfriend Sam, she has to save him. Turns out Sam's a cop on a special paranormal task force. (Everyone knows vamps and weres exist.) They're currently up against the Red Cloaks, which are basically crazy super vampires created by a human virus. Things ended badly between Em and the cop, and she doesn't want to see him again. But after her boss is murdered, he's assigned to the case.
It was a good mystery and I liked how Em went about solving it. I liked the fire fey PI, Jackson who helped her. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure she's "supposed to" wind up with Sam. (Whom I don't like. At all. He's a jerk.)
I liked Rory too, her phoenix partner. They are best friends but they aren't in love with each other, (which is apparently the result of a curse on phoenixes, that they can only love other species.) They still have to swap flames though to stay alive. Which is like sex when they're flame spirits.
Speaking of sex, Em is obsessed. She's always thinking about it. There were quite a few sex scenes, which I skipped, so this book went quickly, but I think there needed to be one less love interest.
It ends well enough but not much is wrapped up. The case isn't even closed. So, yes I plan to read the next one. Hopefully I remember what was happening.
