Ghosts of the Shadow Market by Cassandra Clare
5.0

Calling all the Jem Carstairs stans (like myself): this book is for you. I highly recommend having read The Infernal Devices Trilogy, The Mortal Instruments, and The Dark Artifices in order to avoid major spoilers. I also recommend having read The Red Scrolls of Magic, The Lost Book of the White, and Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy for context, but they aren't as necessary for understanding the idea of this book.

This book follows Jem Carstairs, i.e. Brother Zachariah, through the shadow markets of the world over the course of a century and a half. Moving in chronological order, it is a great filler for the other books as well as providing a fair amount of content with our most beloved characters and some information that is probably going to be pretty important for The Wicked Powers trilogy (unreleased at the time of this review). I personally read this before reading Chain of Gold (The Last Hours #1), but I have read every other released TSC book at this point. Below are the individual reviews for the ten short stories in this collection (spoiler free of course).

Cast Long Shadows: 5/5
Taking place before the events of Chain of Gold, this story provides context for TLH characters and their behavior as well as just making me sob for twenty minutes

Every Exquisite Thing: 5/5
This is one of my favorite stories in the collections, following Anna Lightwood, also before the events of TLH trilogy. This story did a great job in character development as well as providing some serious fan service for TID fans.

Learn About Loss: 4.5/5
Another story that made me cry...

A Deeper Love: 5/5
Tears, but I still don't know if this story made me sad or happy.

The Wicked Ones: 4/5
Important context for the Circle Era characters. This story felt very much like background info, but I enjoyed it regardless.

Son of the Dawn: 4.5/5
JALEC! enough said (also lily chen)

The Land I Lost: 5/5
This is, without a doubt, my favorite story in GOTSM. It did feel longer than necessary, but I didn't mind one bit. The humor was great, but balanced with enough seriousness and emotional moments that gave the story a lot of weight. This story takes place during the events of Lady Midnight, and primarily follows Alec Lightwood and Lily Chen on a visit to the Buenos Aires shadow market.

Through Blood, Through Fire: 3.5/5
This story was definitely one I enjoyed, taking place during TDA, it follows Jem as he closes in on what he has spent years searching for. This one is full of bittersweet romance, and some adorable moments that made me swoon.

The Lost World: 3.5/5
This story follows Ty after the events at the end of Queen of Air and Darkness and introduces a problem that I am sure will be addressed in the Wicked Powers.

Forever Fallen: 5/5
This story made me so happy and so sad at the same time. Also it focuses on one of my comfort characters, Kit Rook, so I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Basically, this book made me super emotional, and I loved it with all my heart.
