Zac and Mia by A.J. Betts

3.0

Thanks to HMH Books for Young Readers for early access to this title. - I won an ARC through Goodreads! Yay!

This was ok - not my favorite book I've read recently, but definitely worth finishing. I'm sorry to say I never did warm up to Mia. She struck me as just a spoiled brat. I really liked Zac's character, and his family. I think, however, my rating this time is based more on the ending. It's as if the author tried to throw these deep, meaningful nuances in at the last minute, without fully grounding them in the book as a whole. This book is being compared to "[b:The Fault in Our Stars|11870085|The Fault in Our Stars|John Green|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1360206420s/11870085.jpg|16827462]" and "[b:Eleanor & Park|15745753|Eleanor & Park|Rainbow Rowell|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1341952742s/15745753.jpg|17225055]." Sadly, while it touches on themes from those works, "Zac & Mia" falls short on the publisher's hype. I think this is a good book for teens - with a note that there is a lot of language in the book - but other books have done a better job with the same themes and situations.
