The concept is interesting but it could have been delivered better. I wish the sci-fi elements were a bigger part of the story, but unfortunately they are really only alluded to. I will say that if you decide to read this book, try to avoid reading the blurb on the back. It basically gives the mystery away and summarizes the book. I think I would have enjoyed it more going in blind, though I also don't know how potential readers would decide to read this book without reading the blurb.
