The Property by Rutu Modan
5.0
This is the first proper grown-up graphic novel I've ever read (despite a childhood love of all things Asterix somehow the genre has passed me by). I was amazed by how much detail can be expressed in a page of simple line drawings - all the nuances of relationships are there, just in a sketched expression. They do say a picture paints a thousand words, and the story here which would have taken a few hours to read as a novella took less than an hour to read.
Mica goes with her grandmother Regina to Warsaw to investigate claiming their family property from before the war. The opening scenes in the airport are lovely. On the plane they meet an old family friend and it soon becomes apparent he has more reasons to be there than he's letting on. Regina too has an ulterior motive and the story that unfolds is touching and beautifully told.
