Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee
Did not finish book. Stopped at 25%.
1) I don’t think I am the target audience for this book, haha. I know this is a romcom and that it is meant to be cheesy, but I couldn’t get into the story at all. The dialogue bothers me a lot; it feels really stilted and forced. It doesn’t flow naturally at all.
It honestly surprised me to find out they’re 17. I dunno, maybe the tropes and the characters just doesn’t work for me. But I tried very hard to get into it and I really just couldn’t.
2) This novel feels like an Asian American literature made for White people. I appreciate the author’s attempt to include Chinese culture and references to the text, but most of the time, it feels like it’s being added so that White people can learn it rather than so that Chinese people can enjoy it. Perhaps my experience as Chinese Indonesian living in Indonesia differs greatly from Asian American living in America. But personally, I truly cannot connect to the characters at all.
