Death in Her Hands by Ottessa Moshfegh

5.0

i was in the mood for a slow burn suspense novel and that’s exactly what i got.

our main character vesta while going on a walk through the forrest like she does all the time finds a handwritten note saying “her name was magda. nobody will ever know who killed her. it wasn’t me, here is her dead body”. vesta knows she should probably do something about it but keeps going off on tangents, escaping in her thoughts, trying to forget about it, aiming to go back to her plain existence. however it keeps playing in your mind, she can’t escape this new reality she has found myself in and ultimately she can’t ignore it and her imagination runs wild.

vesta was a very interesting character. by the end i found myself not knowing what was real and what wasn’t, which put me on edge in the best way.

other high points for me:
• i loved going inside her mind. she explores death, grief, relationships, aging, beauty, loneliness and so on
• i loved the dark, isolated, nature setting
• the relationship between vesta and her dog charlie was an interesting one to follow as was her relationship with her late husband. both are endlessly complicated
• & that ending surprised me greatly
