i've said it once, i'll say it again, and i'll say it as many times as i need to: a series of unfortunate events is, hands down, the BEST collection of children's literature that i've ever read. the amalgamation and blending of various genres is impeccable; the eclectic mix of mystery, comedy, drama, and even absurdism makes for an electrically tense narrative where sinister forces lurk just below the surface of the story. daniel handler has created such an addicting storyline that to this day i'm still consumed with the idea of the sugar bowl, which i think is testament to how intriguing the world of the baudelaires is. how good does a book have to be to get the reader obsessing over a literal macguffin?

the message of the series is beautiful too: in the end, asoue is essentially all about morality. people aren't black or white, which may seem like a 'duh' statement but it's expressed so well in the series that i'm impressed. those hailed as the fire fighters are more morally compromised than they seem and VFD is actually a much darker organisation than what it's introduced as. the moral ambiguity and mystery of asoue is, i think, what i love the most about. that and lemony snicket's strange and distinct style of narration. i'm fairly sure i learnt more words reading asoue as a child than i did in primary school spelling bees.
