We know how the story ends from the very beginning -- "Lydia is dead" -- but the ending is still heartbreaking and surprising. Ng navigates the innermost thoughts and feelings of a family following a shared traumatic event. Racial tensions, gender roles, and family stress are common themes throughout the story. Every character is unique and well-developed. This is my favorite book of all time, and I can't recommend it enough.
