This is definitely one of Dick's better books, and the dialogue even seemed in places better than the usual Dick fare. I think his ideas are great, but I have never been a massive fan of his writing style.

What I do like about this is that Deckard is a much more interesting character than in the movie, although I would have liked more focus on the android/android hunting storyline and less of the Mercerism/empathy machine, which seemed totally disconnected to the main story, as if he'd had an idea he couldn't make work on its own and squeezed it in here to bulk things out. And of course there's an obligatory pre-sex scene of the type that bored me to tears.

I did really enjoy the Luba Luft section (including the 'who is an android' element of the police station section), but the fact that there was a whole police station that Deckard as never heard of was so unlikely it took me out of the narrative.

As for Deckard's true nature. Well, in a number of ways, that is unresolved. As it should be.
