Castle in the Air
by Diana Wynne Jones
The storytelling style was similar in this sequel as in the first book. I wasn't as enamoured with the overall cast of characters and setting this time. I felt a bit unsure whether there was some cultural appropriation going on? I found the plot to be a bit on the superficial side, what with all the wives and marriages and women who only wanted to be brides.
However, I did really like Abdullah, and his flowery way of addressing others. I also did enjoy the way the first book was tied into this sequel. The narrator of the audiobook was the same as in the first Howl's Moving Castle, and I continued to enjoy his reading.
I'm not sure if I would recommend this book. I think Howl's Moving Castle (#1) was so brilliant and delightful in every way that I would prefer not to have associated this book with it. I don't regret reading Castle in the Air, but I think book #1 reads best as a standalone.
That said, I would like to look into reading more by Diana Wynne Jones. Her name is so familiar, I feel convinced that I've read her other books previously, but I don't remember any of the titles I see on Goodreads. So that's another branch of books to add to my reading list!
