The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell

5.0

In 2017, Tallulah is 19 with a baby and a boyfriend she isn't sure she wants. Her mom, Kim, watches the baby while Tallulah and her boyfriend go on a date. When they don't return home, her mom knows something is terribly wrong.
In 2019, a fiction crime writer, Sophie, moves to a boarding school with her boyfriend for his job. While walking in the woods, she sees a sign that says "Dig here"....

Hands down my favorite Lisa Jewell. The alternating points of view, the seamless transition between unrelating stories, the twists are all reasons I enjoyed this book. It was slightly slow in the middle, but the anticipation of knowing something big was coming, made that feeling short lived.

The reason I love this book so much is because of how it relates to the real life missing person case we were all invested in last week. If you're unfamiliar with the Gabby Petito case, @crimjunkie just released an episode with a lot of the information summed up for you. The parallels between this fictional novel and Gabby Petito case are uncanny. Abusive relationships are so common, most of us know someone who has been in one, or have been in one ourselves. The abusive doesn't have to be physical. Abuse can be emotional and come in the form of control, manipulation, and gaslighting.

So while I was flying through the pages to discover what happened to an unhealthy, fictional couple that fell in love at a young age, I was also devouring any updates on Gabby and Brian. So many of us were consumed with the story (and still are) because we can put ourselves in Gabby's shoes. It is so important that we empower young girls (and boys) to know the signs of an abusive relationship.
