We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter
5.0

As frightening as this book was, I could not put it down. The book is so realistic because the writer relied on interviews and historical documents to capture the sight, sound, and smell of the horror that was the Holocaust. She also captured the angst of those who worried and waited for years to hear from family caught in Hitler’s grip. There are lessons in this book for how quickly fascism can overtake a democratic society so quickly that there is no time to think about escaping it. This family was exceptional, fighting hard to survive, maintaining hope, able to leave the past behind, and living out the rest of their years in gratitude and joyfulness.
