Renegades by Marissa Meyer
3.5

I didn’t dislike this book by any means, but it wasn’t at all a new favorite. I can totally see the appeal of the story, it’s fun, adventurous, action packed, and exciting but it just wasn’t for me. One of my biggest issues was the writing because while it wasn’t terrible it was very cheesy at time and that turned me off from the book. Part of me thinks that the cheesiness was intentional and was there to poke fun at the super hero genre, but it was not for me. I don’t need writing to be super serious or anything, but this was a step too far in the other direction. Another issue I had with the writing is the fact that Meyer could not keep the perceived age of the MCs consistent throughout. Sometimes they read like 16/17 year olds (like they’re supposed to) but other times they sounded like they were 11. Which made pinning down how I’m supposed to view these characters very difficult.
That being said, I did like some of the characters. Nova in particular was my favorite. It was really cool to see her moral dilemmas and her struggles between “good” and “evil.”
I did find the story a little predictable but I can’t say whether that’s a fault of the story or simply because I’ve started reading less YA and more Adult and therefore am now more used to complex storylines and far more characters.
Overall, I don’t think this book is bad at all, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the series, at least not in the near future.
