Sarah Monette has very strong skills in writing complex, traumatised characters, as well as creating Splendid Worlds. The whole Doctrine of the Labyrinths series is a one-of-a-kind read, with its weird pace and its remarquable side-stories. It's many books in one, a challenging but deeply rewarding read.
