Paying for It: A Comic-Strip Memoir about Being a John by Chester Brown

challenging reflective medium-paced

3.75

I am feeling so conflicted about this book.  On the one hand, Chester Brown does a fantastic job writing and illustrating his experiences, and I enjoyed reading about them (for the most part).  On the other, he has several absolutely flaming hot takes that are offensive, dangerous, and even flat out wrong (e.g., that only foreign-born people can be trafficked, that addiction is a choice, that even sex workers who don't like the work "want" to have sex with their clients).  Chester Brown is brutally honest by nature—sometimes that works to his benefit, and other times it does not.  Nevertheless, this book is certainly an interesting look at the sex work industry in Canada, but readers should know that it is deeply, deeply flawed.
