Upton Sinclair started with a strong story, and ended on a note of "Socialist Pipedreaming" that is the very downfall of Socialism. Many of his arguments against Capitalism are as valid today as they were then. The world still runs on an army of cheap, exploitable labor. Tens of millions of people, young and old, are worked literally to death or disability for pennies. Government officials and big business bosses are still in bed with each other. Corruption is still the same. At times, I found myself getting mad at Jurgis. Why doesn't the fool know when he's got it good??? There were times when he had either a bunch of money or a great job, and the man blew it!!! Ughh!
