Crazy Brave: A Memoir by Joy Harjo

5.0

The best thing I took from this is familiarity. I'm a Cherokee woman who grew up living in and out of many of the towns mentioned in this memoir. My life isn't Joy's but I see pieces in my cousins, my friends, my mother, my grandmother, my grandfather.

This book also came to me when I was a new mother myself. Something that Joy speaks about with such raw fear and joy and love. I've been a tangle of emotions since it happened and Joy's words brought me immense comfort.

It is not an easy read. It describes the realities of being Indian in Oklahoma in prose that is somehow both frank and lyrical. A lot of experiences are difficult to identify as wrong or unfair when you are a youth and you don't know any better.

I'm better, having read it.
