Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart

5.0

Loved this book so much.

I've seen comparisons to A Little Life in the reviews which I agree with but they are definitely not one and the same.

The main difference for me laid in the fact that Young Mungo as a book is not bias. Even at one of its most gutting points (the ending - which I found more upsetting than A Little Life), Douglas Stuart doesn't let his character's stories be defined by a good or bad outcome - aside from those that really deserve it. The ending is left open - without a conclusively negative or positive result.

He makes an effort throughout the book to remind us of the good and the bad (never shying away from either) within each of their stories, their personalities and their environments which made it a really interesting read for me. This is opposed to A Little Life, where the focus is on negativity - all the things that go wrong. The characters in this book were all so vibrant too. They were written so well that I felt like I could have met them.

This was a really refreshing read for me. Really looking forward to reading more from this author and the upcoming TV series!
