Fevered Star by Rebecca Roanhorse
3.0

While I wasn't a huge fan of Black Sun I did read it twice. I needed a refresher before diving into this release and a second chance at seeing if I would latch onto one or more of the characters. While that last part didn't exactly happen, I certainly needed the refresher.

For this installment, I wanted more Xiala. I also wanted more Xiala with Serapio. My favorite paring didn't get enough scene time together in my opinion. It was the best relationship from book one and while it is leveraged here in Fevered Star nothing replaced it or lived up to its standard. However, Naranpa in the back half of the novel stood out, the magic and world expanded just as richly as I would have expected from the wonderful worldbuilding on display previously, and the climax delivers in satisfying ways. The transformations especially brought on vivid imagery and bad ass scenes. Oh, and I love the titular quote:
“We are but fevered stars," he intoned, like an orator on a stage. "Here a little while, bright with promise, before we burn away.”
