Catboy by Benji Nate

4.0

I saw this in my local natural grocery store and was compelled to grab a copy - if only for the (long stretch here) intention of supporting an artist who would make a whole graphic novel about a anthropomorphized cat.

I read this in one short sitting before bed - it's very cute, the word "quirky" comes up many times but I think people are failing to grasp the deeper statement being made by the author on social norms and personal biases.

What if "Henry the Cat" is merely the protagonists manifestation of all the weird things about her romantic partner / roommate? Maybe this is actually a person who has some weird habits (sub for killing birds, misunderstanding certain things that others might consider "normal" and appropriating her wardrobe). Maybe this is more a statement of gender non-conformity, acceptance and open mindedness than it is actually about a cat.

In one of the chapters / skits -- the pair go to a pet store to pick out a pet after Henry accuses his human of anthropomorphizing the animals and their abilities to provide various types of emotional support and input. He then becomes intensely fascinated with a snail, which they adopt and take home.

Clever and subversive -- I really enjoyed it. I'll read it again before I pass it on to the next friend to read.
