Ava Hunter is a genius. Runaway Ranch is one of the best series out there, and Burn the Wild is no exception. Her characters are so dynamic and deep, filled with heart and devastation. The world of Runaway Ranch is so homely, and the Montgomery family, in general, is just everything to me.

I’d say that you definitely should read the first two books in the series first, as there definitely isn’t as much world-building/scene-setting in Burn the Wild as the others, under the assumption that you’re already familiar with the ranch.

Reese’s story is so utterly tragic. Her character is so pure and beautiful, and to see the darkness and horror that she has had inflicted upon her is gut-wrenching. Hunter writes her story with so much respect and understanding, and I truly appreciated that.

It was nice to see Ford’s real character come out, and to know that he has put in the work to better himself. I’d have liked to have gone into more of his own backstory, the period between Savannah and going to the ranch, but I understand that we got as much as we needed to know, the focus lying on Reese’s story.

I’m not sure if it was intentional, though I hope it was, but there were so many references to new country songs through this book: Am I Okay? by Megan Moroney, Next Thing You Know by Jordan Davis, Heartfirst by Kelsea Ballerini, Fearless by Taylor Swift (ok maybe that’s an oldie but goldie), You Look Like You Love Me by Ella Langley featuring Riley Green, and a few more that I can’t pinpoint. It was so fun spotting them and bopping along to them in my head. Of course, older classics were mentioned by name throughout the book due to Reese’s love of them and that was so beautiful. I’d play them along with Reese and it just felt so… gentle? For want of a better word. It really was a beautiful soundtrack.

I love this family so much. I love Nowhere. I can’t wait to see where this series goes next.
