Loveboat Reunion
by Abigail Hing Wen
4.5/5
When I first saw this sequel announced, I had absolutely zero plans to read it. I really enjoyed Loveboat Taipei but I thought a sequel was completely unnecessary, let alone one that followed two side characters. I was sure there was no way it could be good. So I was kind of shocked when one day I visited the Goodreads page and saw many positive reviews! After reading through what some people had to say about the book, I decided to give it a try and I'm so surprised at how much I enjoyed it! Dare I say, potentially even more than the first book?
Romance really isn't my genre at all, let alone contemporary YA, but I think this book, as with the previous book, really benefits from its characters being a bit older than is usual for the demographic. While I had some gripes about the writing as I almost always do with contemporary YA (I swear these authors write about social media and technology as though they've never actually used it sometimes) I at least didn't find myself cringing or taken out of the story at any point, which is a win for me! I found both Sophie and Xavier's perspectives to be engaging and liked how they came together. I was completely drawn into the extravagance and drama but I also liked how the author handled the more serious topics present, and I felt that there was a great amount of depth to this story. Overall I am very impressed by how engaging and enjoyable this was and I'm very glad I decided to pick it up after all!
