I’m disappointed in this series. I’ve had it recommended to me so many times by so many different people and they are all like “yeah it’s a really good book you should totally read it.”, but then I read the first book and it didn’t live up to its reputation. Granted, the premise is one of the most interesting I’ve heard in YA in a while, but the execution is poorly done.

At first I thought it was one of those books that needs a sequel to improve, so against my better judgement, I read the second book, and once again, I find it below par.

In terms of the plot, there’s not much happening, and all major events can be combined into one book. Gwen spends most of her time moping or fretting about her relationship, which is way too much considering how many other things need her attention. Like finding more about closing the Circle of Twelve. Or Lucy and Paul. Or putting her ghost power to good uses. Or THE SECRET or THE GUARDIANS. Or, I don’t know, actually getting to know Gideon rather than admiring how pretty he is all the time. She has enough shit to deal with.

I dislike how romance has become the main focus. The idea driving the book is so intriguing that I find myself wanting to continue the series just for that, but as this is a YA book, complaining about the saturation of romance is like complaining the sky is blue. Nevertheless, there is an ridiculous amount of pining for someone who doesn't even deserve it.
Let's talk about Gideon. He is a pompous, arrogant, smug, mood-swingy twat. I still don't see the appeal here, considering how he's nice one second, and insulting the next. I want to strangle him,or hit him multiple times for treating Gwen like a fool.
Gwen doesn't know much about Gideon at this point does she? Rather than "in love" I feel as if she's infatuated with him. It's not believable. Take Paul and Lily for instance. Those two behave like a married couple. They are partners, whereas Gideon looks down on Gwen and bosses her around.
I'm curious about the ending. Just one more book and I'll have all my questions answered (If there are no gaping plot holes).
