Pride and Premeditation by Steffanie Holmes
3.0
I enjoyed this book as part of the wider story arc of the series, but I can’t say I was especially interested in its self-contained plot.
Mina has to start coming to terms with her worsening eyesight, the polyamorous relationship between the main characters gains more depth, and more is discovered about the magic of the book shop and how Mina fits into the broader mystery. All of those developments are welcome to the series as a whole, though the book does feel a bit like filler in that regard.
The plot specific to this instalment felt really lacklustre. I wasn’t especially interested in the new players, the group getting caught up in another crime to solve felt very repetitive, and the pacing was a bit off with too much crammed into the last few chapters.
I am enjoying the series as a whole and I liked seeing more sides to the main characters in this book (as well as watching the wider story tick along) but I’m hoping the next book has more to it.
(Also, the covers on the Kindle versions of these books are beautiful - why does Goodreads have to use such rubbish versions!?)
