Gods & Monsters by Shelby Mahurin
4.0

!!! I was so nervous to read this one after that disastrous second book but honestly it was great, and a really nice ending to this trilogy. I think what really got me in Serpent and Dove is how ill-fated but perfect Reid and Lou were for each other, so, to see that dynamic back in play in this book made it feel more true to their overall characters. In the second book things were just so. fucking. chaotic. I think Mahurin does this thing (that, really, a lot of fantasy authors do) where they world build/info dump A BUNCH and it's such a turn off for readers.

ANYWAY. This entire book was sooo good on dynamics between the 6 main characters. I loved it. I did feel like... idk the Ansel thing was overplayed. Don't get me wrong, I loved him, but Lou kept saying he was her best friend and I didn't.... feel that way? Idk. I also read the other two books like last year so.

The battle scene was predictably a shit show, too many aspects of the world-building thrown together, and I feel like when you want a full fantasy world with all these different types of characters, you have to spend time developing them to make it believable. (IE Harry Potter -- 7 books -- we know every creature and person like the back of our hand).

I did like the mermaids tho. Possibly by favorite sub-category of people in the series. Anyway, I really loved this ending, and, I liked seeing the growth of all the characters. 4 stars because of the more messy aspects. ALSO I wanted to mention I loved the balance of humor with the fantasy elements, I found it so refreshing.
