Here's me reading that bonus story:

The amount and circus of emotion that I just went to through!

Magnus and Alec were having the time of their lives being a family with their son, Max. However, Shinyun and Ragnor took the Lost Book of the White. Not only that but Shinyun was wielding a new kind of magic and placed a thorn in Magnus' heart. Three thorns would make him a servant to their 'master'. If he refuses, it would mean his death.

Rating: ★★

Alright, I love Cassandra Clare so much and all her books. She was the meaning of my childhood and one of the authors that made me love reading so much. But that does not mean that I am not going to be rating this book unfairly. I still had to be honest. And I'm saying... it's boring.

I LOVE MALEC. I love Magnus--he's my most favorite character in the entire Shadowhunter Chronicles. But why, why, why. MAGNUS DESERVES BETTER.

The things that I like

Exploring the other country where shadowhunters exist. In this book we get to see our characters in China. It was a nice change of scenery than the usual London, New York, and L.A. setting. The customs and the culture there were very detailed.

The plot was very interesting. It was just interesting. More on this later.

Samael. Is it right to love a Prince of Hell? Absolutely not. But I buy his humor and he's breath of fresh air in this drying book.

I love that this centers around MALEC.

I'm sorry, these are just the things that I could think about.

The things that I DID NOT like

The other shadowhunters. Don't get me wrong. I love the whole squad. BUT I DON'T NEED THEM THERE. They already had their time in TMI series. Leave this book alone! This story could have focused better on Magnus and the exploration of the extent of his powers. Inserting the whole gang here only made the book feel crowded and suffocating, like everybody has to have a line. Nope, I'm not having that.

Too much conversation. There's a LOT of characters here, alright? A LOT, A LOT. More than TLH characters I think? And because there are a lot of characters, the conversation was filled with everybody taking and getting their two cents in. WE NEED TO GET MOVING PEOPLE.

Some of the characters. I don't need everybody's back story filling this book! It would be fine if the setting had been set in China all along and that I'd see these characters in the next book, but... am I? Do I really need to get to know them all?

There was too much repetition. There's this part in the book wherein they keep on repeating to everybody that comes on the scene the gist of what they were planning to do. Like gurl, get it over with.

The execution of the plot. The plot on hindsight is great. But I don't know what on earth happened on this book that it turned out like this.

The writing. I don't know how I managed to be so bored.

In sum:

I'm not sure if I'm going to recommend this to people not unless they are really fans of the Shadowhunter World. There was just too much context needed to be able to wrap their heads around this story.

Now let's get talking about that bonus story

I have the first edition from McElderry and it came with a bonus story titled "In Dreams Begin", a story featuring Tessa and Jem.

Here's me on the first few pages:

Here's me at the end of it:

Alright, you don't talk to me about Herongraystairs and expect me not to bawl. I live and breathe for those three and every time they show up somewhere in the other books of The Shadovhunter Chronicles, you bet it, I CRY. I JUST DO OKAY? I try to stop it and laugh at myself but the tears just keep on spilling out.

SO NOBODY TOUCH ME UNTIL THE NEXT FEW DAYS WHEN I FINALLY GET OVER THAT BONUS STORY (if I'm ever gonna get over it).
