Really loved the plot and the magic system used in this book. The history of witches ruling and then being overthrown and going underground while being hunted was great.
Enjoyed Rune and Alex and Gideon as characters, though I wished there were more scenes with badass Rune and perhaps sensitive Gideon (maybe with Alex? Maybe defending Rune?) to show more than lust and a more even match between them. Good tension between them but very PG spice was fine for a YA book but I was looking for maybe more tenderness? Care? Emotional revealing after the spice? (the beach scene was best for this).
Sorta-spoiler…..
The entire time I was rooting for Rune and Gideon but I honestly flipped after she was revealed and wanted her with Alex instead (who FINALLY voiced his feelings). Gideon still hasn’t shown true care for her or that he’d fight for her. He can’t get beyond his hate even while seeing her hurt and threatened and it’s honestly kind of gross to see after having so much hope for him as a character growing and seeing and thinking beyond his past experiences.
Looking forward to book 2 but worried Gideon can’t redeem himself for me. He had a chance when it mattered in this book and was fine with the violent outcome and turned his back. I understand his anger and pain won out but I had really hoped he was finally seeing Rune as a person despite his traumatic past.
