The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Delaney

3.0

The Spook’s Apprentice is a fantasy novel written by Joseph Delaney. I bought this book whilst I was in a charity shop on one of my holidays, and I remember thinking that the synopsis sounded super interesting. The story follows Tom, a seventh son of a seventh son, and he was born to be a Spook’s apprentice. Learning the ways of a Spook is both interesting and intimidating to Tom, and the more he learns, the more he realises how dangerous the job really is.

KEY POINTS:
* Goodreads states that it's a YA novel, but it feels very aimed towards children
* was really drawn into the story and enjoyed the world building
* character development was pretty good and I enjoyed seeing how much Tom's character changed within the story
* did feel a little mediocre at times, nothing really stood out and gripped me
* felt pretty detached from the storyline and character most of the time - I just couldn't seem to connect to it that much

Nevertheless, this was a pretty easy read and was enjoyable. Not the best book I’ve read this year, but not the worst either.
